Tarot Portfolio

Since 2016, Killerpancake Illustration has produced limited edition hand drawn tarot decks about Pittsburgh, mental health, Hell, the queer body, and Appalachian folklore from Western Pennsylvania.

Haunted: A Cursed Appalachian Tarot Deck

(2024)

Inspired by Appalachian folklore and urban legends from Southwestern PA, West Virginia, and Eastern Ohio, HAUNTED is a blend of history and horror in one 78-card tarot deck with accompanying 94 page guide that includes both meanings & legends.

CULT

(2020)

CULT is a dark, horror themed tarot deck built for shadow work and with the queer body in mind.

Queer people are isolated in society, forced over the decades to find themselves in the subtext of mainstream culture. With the rise of awareness around LGBTq+ issues and celebrity, the reaction from conservative straight communities is to vilify and demonize queer people and culture. CULT explores the isolation created by this vilification but also celebrates the humanity of the queer body but embracing our darkeness. Using the human figure and horror references, CULT aims to celebrate the beauty and erotic darkness of the human form.

Based on the Rider-Waite-Smith format, the cards correlate to standard meanings, however this deck submerges the reader into their unconscious confronting deeper thoughts and feelings. Horror films have a long history in queer communities. Using horror elements and gothic imagery, CULT is perfect for those that perseverate on the darker side.

INFERNO

(2021)

The strangest tarot deck in this collection, INFERNO is a set of 78 darkly imaginative stickers, (1.3 x 2.2 inches in size). Inspired by Dante's Inferno, this deck compares his version of Hell to the late-capitalism and our climate crisis as of 2021.

Each deck was mailed in a hand-painted "coffin" box.

Lost River

(2017)

Card size: 2.5” x 3.5”

Suits are Hearts, Clubs, Spades, and Diamonds

Lost River is an experimental deck, where each suit corresponds to an emotion. The face cards of each suit are portraits of people in the throws of Anxiety, Depression, Jealousy, or Rage.

Bridge Witches vol. 1

(2016)

Suits are Cups, Cicadas (Coins), Fences (Swords), and Trees (Wands)

This tarot deck came to life after five years of interviews with Pittsburghers about their lives in the city. It is not a story about football and pierogis but rather a look at life in the Steel City in "New Pittsburgh". What does that mean and who is that for?

Bridge Witches vol. 2 & 3

(2017-19)

Suits are Cups, Cicadas (Coins), Fences (Swords), and Trees (Wands)

The goal of volume 2 and 3 was to update and expand the cards within the original Bridge Witches. Volume 2 came with a physical guidebook (the first and only time Bridge Witches had one). Volume 3 had the Cicada (coins/pentacles) cards replaced with a new set exploring the gig economy in Pittsburgh.

Neither was a complete re-master of Bridge Witches but showed progression in mastering digital illustration and move to using Procreate instead of Adobe Photoshop.
